Desktop Notifications Now Warn You of New Gmail Chat Messages and E-Mails

If you’re one of those folks who has to keep checking your Gmail inbox for new messages every two minutes, here’s a cure: Gmail now lets you receive desktop notifications for new chat messages and e-mails.

To turn the feature on, click on settings in the upper right corner of Gmail, scroll down and choose whether you want to be notified of chat messages, e-mails, or only important e-mails.

The new feature is HTML5-based and currently works only in Chrome, but Google says it’s working to make notifications part of the standard web platform.

Desktop notifications are nothing new and we’ve seen dozens of third-party apps that do it (GWatchman, for example, is a good choice), so if you don’t want to be dependent on Google Chrome, you can use one of those. Still, it’s nice to see Google recognizing this feature as important and integrating it into Gmail, which is still being improved at an amazing pace, with new features showing up almost on a weekly basis.
